LINCOLN -- George S. Briggs, 84, of Lincoln, died at 10:25 p.m. Friday (July 29, 2005) at his residence. A graveside service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Roselawn Cemetery, Charleston. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln with the Rev. Phillip Blackburn officiating. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. today at the church and from 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until service time at the church. The Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements. He was born Oct. 30, 1920, in Charleston, son of George and Edna Smith Briggs. He married Thelma Whiteleather in 1947; she survives. Other survivors include a son, Tim Briggs of Loveland, Colo.; a daughter, Beth Green of Lincoln; one brother, Max Briggs of Indianapolis, Ind.; five sisters, Mary Hutchinson of Port Charlotte, Fla., Katherine Briggs of Charleston, Ruth Bunch of Charleston, Betty Colee of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Margaret Ann Metheny of Green Cove Springs, Fla.; two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother and a half sister. Mr. Briggs retired after 38 years as a high school choral music teacher in 1982. He had taught in Edwardsville, Peoria and Lombard. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln and was a certified Master Gardener.
